I had the very special privilege of photographing Veronica & John’s registry office wedding at Wandsworth Town Hall. Photographing any wedding is always a pleasure but when you get to do it for a friend its always something special & this wedding was no different. Wandsworth provided a great backdrop to an intimate and special day for everyone involved.
When Veronica & John asked me to do some wedding photography for them at their registry office wedding I of course jumped at the opportunity and said yes. With a bigger wedding planned for the week after, this intimate ceremony was to take care of all the legalities & formalities. My brief was simple- document the event, a couple of group shots and some candid shots of those who were attending.
Not your normal wedding photography request then- no couple posing, no extended shoot list with various family combinations and with strict instructions to enjoy my day and remember I was a guest as well- awesome. One of those great times when someone puts a camera in my hand and just lets me loose to see what I can capture- bring it on.
The ceremony was a lovely intimate setting where everyone had great views and could hear everything that was being said. I had the freedom to bounce around a bit and find some great angles to snap the happy couple from. Once the ceremony was finished we moved to the main entrance hall where we got a couple of group shots before moving outside (luckily avoiding the various downpours) and heading off to the reception which was being held in a local pub in the Balham area.
All of these settings provided a great opportunity to capture friends and family alike as they laughed, hugged, joked and smiled throughout the day. I took a slightly longer lens than I normally would have which allowed me to get some great natural shots of people at some great moments, without waving a big camera in their face and scaring them off. I always like to try and work around a group and make sure I get at least a couple of shots of as many people as I can and with an area reserved for the reception it was like shooting fish in a barrel as everyone was contained in one area.
I came away with some really fantastic photographs and some nice documentation of the day in a very relaxed style. Its always great to mix things up every now and then, try something new and push your work into a different direction. On top of all that it was great to see two good friends tie the knot and to be a part of their (first!) special day!
